Drop It

2020

A self-written illustrated book.

The French term ‘mise en abyme’ is used to describe something that exists within itself, for example a story within a story or a painting within a painting. Although the most well known use is in the trope ‘and it was all a dream’ (the narrator shares that the original story exists within the wider story of the character being asleep) I was interested in exploring how I could incorporate this concept in a more nuanced way. This project allowed me to do so as I explored the warped nature of memories between people recalling the same event; in this case, a vivid childhood memory of having a burnt potato thrown at me, which no-one else remembers.
