The Waiting Game
2021
This
project centres around the concept of waiting - the transitory, empty time between activities. How are we aware that time has passed? What visual signifiers show this - heating, cooling, stiffness, rusting, corrosion, dyeing, melting, growing....
With this in mind I worked with wax casting in which drying time is integral to the process. My experiments with this material led to the creation of 5 impossible candles that cannot burn properly so are devoid of use, much like the waiting time I was exploring.
The physicality of these constructed objects considers time spatially, and waiting time specifically as negative space between subjects and objects. They are presented within a set that brings abstract and figurative together, warping a recognisable kitchen set up. A heightened awareness of the present moment draws these negative spaces to the fore while the objects of waiting are pushed to the background.
