A Dinner; A Constellation
2020
This project explored the interactions that occur around the shared, sacred space of a dining table - the conversations that arise when a group of people sit, sharing food, in the same space. Moving in space, and moving among people, alters group dynamics in ways that cannot be anticipated. However, these unexpected bonds are often the catalyst for serendipitous conversations that are unlikely to develop in other situations. By interfering with the very objects that constitute a dinner party (the plates, the place settings, the table itself) my goal was to prompt new connections.
The edition of painted glass plates re-frames the dinner party as an improvised performance, with each decorative element informing how diners interact with each other throughout the evening. Each guest plays a role within the wider event - they are one among a cast of friends, strangers, acquaintances. As a result, the plates and accompanying instruction cards act as both loose scripts and pieces in a game in which the outcome changes with each dinner. This project was documented through a real-time event and accompanying book from this dinner.
